“This cable-stayed structure for bicycle and foot traffic enhances the beauty of the area and offers greater convenience for residents,” New Taipei City Mayor Eric Chu said at the launch ceremony. “It is the fourth bridge built in the city since New Taipei was upgraded to a special municipality in 2010.”
The structure boasts a distinctive profile dominated by an uneven single span of steel cables. It is lined on both sides with 164 LED lights, and also features a slanting 75-meter pylon with a bulbous top covered in 84 and 78 LED lights, respectively.
According to Chu, the pylon is certain to become a must-see after-dark attraction. “I am truly impressed with the architecture and believe it ranks alongside New Moon Bridge,” he said.
Connecting Banqiao and Xinzhuang districts in New Taipei, NMB is said to be considered the most photogenic in Taiwan by professional photographers from home and abroad.
But the new bridge is more than just a spectacular sight. It is set to serve as a mecca for cyclists and education, with the city government opening a bicycle maintenance facility and exhibition room for environmental education at nearby Jiangchang Pumping Station.
“I truly hope those living in and visiting Xizhi will make the best use of this world-class facility,” Chu said. (SSC-JSM)
