The win was the duo’s first grass court victory and followed their first WTA title at the inaugural Shenzhen Open last year, an outdoor hard court event.
“It was a long wait until this victory, but we never lost faith. This is a top-flight tournament, so we had to up our game in terms of endurance, stability and strategy,” older sister Chan Yung-jan said.
The Chans beat off strong competition on their way to the title in Eastbourne. Downed duos included five former WTA women’s doubles champions: Cara Black, Sara Errani, Martina Hingis, Flavia Pennetta and Roberta Vinci. Following the win, Chan Hao-ching is expected to enter the top 20 of the WTA doubles rankings for the first time.
The sisters will play in the upcoming Wimbledon Championships in London starting June 23. “We are fully prepared for Wimbledon and looking to achieve our very best with continued support from our fans in Taiwan,” the Chans said. (YHC-SDH)
